Interconnector

An interconnector is located within the Port of Dundee estate. The interconnector infrastructure was used by the former coal fired Carolina Power station located in the Port.

There is potential for this national grid connection to be used to link renewable power production, such as tidal power generation. This can be done in or near to the Port. Using the interconnector in this way therefore won't require the construction of electrical infrastructure such as pylons.

It is estimated that the potential power available is in the region, from sources such as tidal power generation and other renewables is 100MW. This is enough electricity to power 220,000 homes, or all the homes in Tayside.

A wide range of renewable technologies present opportunities for renewable energy production in or near to the Port based interconnector.

Tidal power generation

The port-based interconnector makes it easier to transmit power generated from the site. Indeed, a wide range of renewable technologies, including tidal power generation, present opportunities for renewable energy production here.

The port is located at the mouth of the River Tay. The tidal stream activity and wave activity in and around the River Tay and the North Sea present exciting opportunities for tidal power generation.
