As a regional employment centre, Dundee draws employees from a wide catchment area of Perthshire, Angus and North East Fife. Dundee City's population of 142,470 is supplemented by over 300,000 economically active, highly skilled residents within a 30 minute drive time and almost 630,000 people within a 60 minute catchment drive time, providing a reservoir of skilled staff. Dundee was selected in January 2010 for the third year in four as the one of the seven most intelligent communities on earth by an independent think tank, (The Intelligent Community Forum).
The city has one of the highest student ratios in Scotland with graduate output from two key Scottish universities and Dundee College all based within the city with high attainment in engineering and renewable related fields.
Dundee has a significant manufacturing base with several key companies employing highly skilled staff including WL Gore, TRAK Europe, Day International, Axis-Shield, Michelin and Axeon.
Skills Alliance The Universities and Colleges of Tayside have formed an alliance, creating a unique combination of training and research & development expertise to support the offshore renewable energy industry. Energy Training East offers a comprehensive range of training and support services. This covers apprenticeship level and nationally accredited technician skills programme, bespoke technical courses and graduate and post-graduate level teaching and research, as well as opportunities for knowledge transfer partnerships.This breadth and depth of provision ensures the availability of a local, well-qualified workforce, who are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to take the offshore energy industry forward to long-term future growth and success.
The five institutions, all located within a 22 mile radius of the Dundee Port, have a history of successful collaboration. Given their extensive experience of working with industry, nationally and internationally they know and understand the emerging needs of this rapidly developing sector.
